With the agrarian distress reaching its peak under the present BJP government, thousands of farmers across India gathered at Parliament Street, Delhi on 20th and 21st of November 2017 to demand a one-time complete waiver of farmer loans and fair prices for their produce. The agitation was launched under the umbrella of All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee whereby 184 farmer groups participated in the protest. They were protesting against the cost versus income imbalance presently being faced by the farmers in the country, leading to suicides and indebtedness. One of the highlights of the protest was the preparation of a draft bill, encompassing the two key demands that were debated by a farmer’s parliament. Farmers demanded a legally binding assurance of fair and remunerative prices through measures like higher procurement, deficiency price payment, appropriate trade policy and punitive measures for traders purchasing farm produce at below support prices. The farmers have reiterated that if their demands are not met they will follow it up with militant action.
